ELMAR International Workshop on
Video Processing and Multimedia Communications

VIPromCom'99

June 23-25, 1999 - Zadar, Croatia

During the 41st International Symposium ELMAR, the ELMAR International Workshop on Video Processing and Multimedia Communications will be held. Workshop will be organised by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), University of Zagreb, co-sponsored by the IEEE Croatia Section and FER, and supported by Croatian Radio Televison (HRT) and Croatian Telecommunications (HT). Recognised experts are invited to send proposals for presentations covering topics on theoretical, experimental and applied video/image processing and multimedia communications. The aim of the Workshop is to be an international forum for presentation and discussion of advances in the field and new perspective research areas.

INVITED PAPERS

Professor Zarko Cucej
Maribor, Slovenia

"Visualization and Analysis of multichannel Satellite Images"

Abstract:

In the article the suggestion for handling of large volume remote-sensed data based on results of the recent research of data fusion, hyper-resolution, compression and progressive visualization are summarized. A case-study for using in next generation of meteorology satellite is given.

Biography:

Professor Zarko Cucej received a B.Sc. degree from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1976, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree from the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Maribor in 1984 and 1990 respectively, all in electrical engineering. His previous appointments in the industry were as Design Engineer (1970-1976), Chief Engineer (1976-1980) and head of the lab for security systems. Since 1985 he has been with the Technical Faculty in Maribor, Slovenia, now known as the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, where he is an Associate Professor. He was a Visiting Professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, USA in 1995 and visiting scientist at German Aerospace Center (DLR)/German Remote Sensing Data Center, Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany in 1998. His present research interests are in the field of signal processing and remote control. Professor Cucej is a member of IEEE.

"Feature-based Stereo Correspondence using Parallel Symbiotic Genetic Algorithms"

Abstract:

Retrieval of depth information from the projection of a scene and the shape of appeared objects is carried out using multiple scene views and via triangulation the 2D coordinates of the projections are transformed back to the 3D coordinates of the real world visible surfaces. A new way of enforcing figural continuity in feature-based stereo matching , without the ordering constraint is proposed. An edge similarity criterion based on fuzzy logic and a weighted bipartite graph formulation of the underlying intra-row correspondence problems are proposed. Then it is shown how a deterministic algorithm can search for the optimum correspondences. A matcher based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs), which solves the same intra-row problems with equivalent accuracy is configured. These independent GAs are then modified to a set of cooperative Symbiotic GAs (SGAs) whose search is twofold. They seek matchings that maximise the local intra-row similarities and simultaneously try to maintain consistency at the global inter-row level. The performance of the system is exemplified and compared with dynamic programming and bipartite matching methods.

Biography:

Mr Panos Liatsis graduated in 1990 with a first class degree in Electrical Engineering from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. He is currently a LucasVarity Research Lecturer at the Control Systems Centre, UMIST and the director of the Intelligent Systems & Sensing Laboratory. He is also the UK leader of the EU "Network of Excellence in Intelligent Manufacturing Systems" and the organiser of the 1996 IEEE/IEE/IMC Workshop on Image and Signal Processing (IWISP). He has over 7 years experience in intelligent sensing & control systems research and has published over 30 scientific papers in the area of computer vision and intelligent systems and is the co-editor of the 1996 IWISP Proceedings. He is currently a partner in 2 EC-funded projects and has a track record of collaborative research with European industry and research centres, including BAe, BNFL and LucasVarity.

"Application of Wavelength Division Multiplex in Optical Networks"

Abstract:

The paper will be focused on application of Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) in optical networks (broadcast networks, wavelength routing networks). Some aspects of the Physical layer of the WDM optical networks will be described. We will stress our attantion mainly to WDM optical network topologies and protocols applicable in WDM optical networks.

Biography:

Professor Pavol Podhradsky studied Telecommunications at Slovak University of Technology (STU) in Bratislava (1960-1965). Subsequently, he started work at the Telecommunications Department of STU Bratislava as a lecturer. He obtained his PhD degree in 1980. Since 1983 he has been an Associate Professor at the mentioned department. In 1990-1994 he was head of the Telecommunications department of the STU Bratislava. Profesional orientation: signal processing, theory of communication systems, telecommunication networks and services.
